Editorial philosophy

What we ask of the work.

The house publishes for clear thinking, honest ideas, and useful truths. These are the standards a book, a claim and a piece of marketing copy all have to meet.

The Candour test

Is it true? Is it clear? Is it necessary? Is it useful?

Applied before publication, before marketing and before any partnership. A book that fails one of the four is not ready, however commercially appealing it looks.

Values

Nine commitments.

  1. 01

    Truth before tribe

We do not shape ideas to flatter an ideology, an audience, an author or a commercial trend. A book that only tells one side what it already believes is not worth publishing.

  2. 02

    Clarity before complexity theatre

Difficult ideas should be made understandable without being made simplistic. Jargon that conceals weak thinking is a failure of editing, not a sign of rigour.

  3. 03

    Evidence before assertion

Big claims require strong sources, transparent reasoning and the discipline to show where the argument is load-bearing and where it is not.

  4. 04

    Courage with care

We pursue uncomfortable truths without dehumanising people or rewarding cruelty. Candour is not bluntness for its own sake.

  5. 05

    Curiosity over certainty

We value serious questions, revision and intellectual humility where certainty is genuinely unavailable.

  6. 06

    Depth over noise

We publish for durability beyond the news cycle. A book should still be useful after the algorithm has moved on.

  7. 07

    Independence of mind

We encourage authors to think beyond inherited scripts and conventional camps, including our own.

  8. 08

    Usefulness matters

A book should leave a reader seeing, deciding or acting more clearly than before.

  9. 09

    No pretence

We avoid inflated claims, false authority and manipulative marketing. The reader should feel respected, not sold to.

Independence

The test a reader should be able to apply.

A reader arriving cold should reasonably conclude that this is a small independent British non-fiction publisher — not one author’s personal publishing vehicle.

That test governs hierarchy, copy, photography, author prominence and catalogue design. Authors are presented as writers published by the house, and the house is presented as more durable than any individual on its list.

See clearly. Think independently. Act honestly.
