What we collect, and why.
Visiting the site is not tracked. A proposal is something you choose to send, and it is used to decide whether the book might belong on the list.
Proposals
The submissions form asks for the idea before the manuscript. Please don’t send a manuscript until we ask for one. The form is not a place to upload a file, and we do not want confidential or commercially sensitive material in an initial proposal.
If you send a proposal, we collect:
- Your name, email address and country.
- The working title, and a subtitle if you offer one.
- The category you choose, and the status of the manuscript.
- What the book is about, what the reader should understand afterwards, a short account of the book, who it is for, why you are the person to write it, and why you are sending it to Candour.
- A word count, previous work, and a website or other relevant link, if you choose to give them.
- Your confirmation that you have the right to submit the material, and that submission does not transfer copyright or create a publishing obligation.
The form also includes a check against automated submissions. That check is not treated as part of the proposal.
Why, and where it is kept
We use a proposal to assess the book and to reply to you about it. We do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not use the submission to advertise to you.
Proposals are stored in a private database used by the house, separate from the public catalogue. They are not published on this website, and there is no public way to read them back. A plain-text copy may also be sent to the editorial desk so the proposal can be read. That copy is for assessment, not for a mailing list.
Access is limited to the people who edit for the house. Other writers cannot see your proposal. The public site cannot list it.
A retention period for unsuccessful proposals has not been set. That remains a decision for the house. Until it is made, proposals are kept for editorial assessment and for correspondence about the submission itself, and not for marketing.
Access, correction and deletion
You can ask for a copy of the proposal we hold, for a correction, or for it to be deleted. Write to the house and say which of those you want. You do not need an account.
